What changes when you dub English into Portuguese

Translation is the easy half. These are the parts that usually give a dub away.

Brazilian Portuguese, not a blend

The gap between Brazilian and European Portuguese is wider than the one between Latin American and Castilian Spanish. European Portuguese swallows unstressed vowels to the point that Brazilian listeners often find it hard to follow, and the two use different constructions for ordinary things: estou falando in Brazil, estou a falar in Portugal. WavBoost produces Brazilian Portuguese, which is what roughly four out of five Portuguese speakers grew up with.

The sounds that aren't in Spanish

Portuguese gets treated as Spanish with a different accent, and it isn't. The nasal diphthongs in não, mãe and coração have no Spanish equivalent, and a model that approximates them produces something Brazilians identify as foreign within a sentence, even when every word is correct. These are generated as Portuguese phonemes rather than nearest-neighbour substitutes.

Pronounced as Portuguese

Portuguese takes the long way round

Brazilian Portuguese reaches for constructions English handles in one word. Continuous actions take a full gerund phrase, object pronouns attach to verbs and add syllables, and the result runs 20 to 30% longer than the English it came from. Segment timing is adjusted to absorb that rather than speeding up playback, and where a specific line still needs room you can move its timestamps and regenerate.

How it works

Three steps

Go from a English video to a Portuguese track you can publish.

  1. 01

    Upload your English video

MP4, MOV, MP3 or WAV. The voice is cloned from the audio already in it.

  2. 02

    Check the Portuguese transcript

Edit the wording and the timing of any segment, then regenerate until it lands right.

  3. 03

    Download

The dubbed video, or the Portuguese audio on its own to add as a second track.

FAQ

Questions about Portuguese

What creators and localization teams ask before their first Portuguese dub.

Brazilian Portuguese. It's the variety roughly four out of five Portuguese speakers use, and the two differ enough in pronunciation and everyday grammar that a Brazilian audience notices European Portuguese immediately.

Your voice is cloned from the original audio, so the Portuguese track keeps your timbre, pacing and emotional tone. It's your voice speaking Portuguese, not a stock narrator reading a translation.

Portuguese runs roughly 20 to 30% longer than English for the same content. Each segment is timed against the original and phrasing is adjusted to fit, rather than speeding up playback. Where a line still needs room, you can move its timestamps yourself and regenerate.

Yes. The translated text is fully editable before the voice is generated, which matters for product names, brand terms and anything where Brazilian usage differs from a literal translation. Edit and regenerate the job.

Yes. Download the dubbed audio on its own and add it through YouTube's multi-language audio feature, which serves Portuguese-speaking viewers your Portuguese track automatically while keeping the original video.
